MónaShell Biotrickling Filter
The MónaShell Biofiltration System from Bord na Móna is a unique patented technology, which allows for the biological treatment of airstreams with high concentrations of reduced sulphur compounds. Following extensive research and development in the early ‘90s, the MónaShell process was developed in-house by Bord na Móna and patented worldwide in 1994.

Traditionally, biotrickling filters have been similar to chemical scrubbers in that they employ randomly packed plastic packing. As with biofilters, pH control becomes a limiting factor in airstream treatment due to acidic byproducts of odor oxidation. Bord na Mona’s patented MónaShell, the enhanced biotrickling filter, uses a byproduct of the shellfish processing industry-shells-in place of plastic media. Shells slowly release calcareous compounds, which neutralize acidic sulfur compounds. The result is effective pH control and sustained odor oxidation. MónaShell achieves up to 99% removal of odors, H2S, organic sulfides, and VOC’s. Although the shell media is eventually consumed, with the exception of very high concentration regimes, life spans are similar to conventional filter media.
