Bord na Móna History
The experience of fuel shortages during the war reinforced the Irish State's commitment to developing the country's energy resources leading to the creation of Bord na Móna in 1946. The Government's First Development Plan provided for two turf-fired power stations, the development of peat bogs to produce over a million tons of sod-peat per annum, and the establishment of a peat research station. This program was supplemented in 1950 by a 'Second Development Program' which provided for four additional power stations, and substantial increases in sod peat and milled peat production. Markets for the use of moss peat in horticulture were also developed. Between 1950 and 1967 sod peat power stations with a capacity of 117 MW and milled peat stations with a capacity of 290 MW were commissioned.
In 1974 Bord na Móna undertook the Third Development Program. This involved the development of a further 20,000 ha. of peat land for milled peat production to supply fuel for increased electricity generation, and the construction of Littleton Briquette factory. This program was as a result of the oil embargo in 1973/74, and led to the commissioning of further milled peat power stations contributing 130 MW of electricity.
In 1991 the Environmental Products Division was established to develop and market the products which resulted from research and development undertaken by the company in the 1980s. This led to the introduction of the Puraflo Biofilter Wastewater Treatment System and its introduction to the US in 1993. In August 1995 Bord na Móna acquired the coal business of Consolidated Holdings Ltd., the largest importer and distributor of coal products in Ireland. In 2000 and 2005 three new power stations with a total capacity of 370 MW were commissioned. The company has also built the first commercial wind farm in Ireland and is planning to develop a 320 megawatt wind farm which would be one of the biggest wind farms in Europe.
In December 2006 Edenderry Power station was acquired at a cost of €79 million. This 128 MW station enables Bord na Móna to supply electricity generated from its traditional peat fuel.
Bord na Móna completed the acquisition of Advanced Environmental Solutions (Ireland) in 2007 at a cost of €62 million. This represented a major step in the development of the company's waste management service seeking recycling / recovery of the collected waste.
